Neurostar TMS - How it works

Neurostar TMS isn’t medication, but it’s still extremely effective. Studies show that TMS is actually more effective than antidepressants for treating depression if patients have already tried past medications and therapies. Wondering how that’s possible? Check out how Neurostar TMS works below! For more information, call or text us at (212) 707-8662

Depression in the brain

Brain scans of patients with depression show less activity than those without depression. Recent research has shown this decreased activity is due to a disruption in certain brain circuits.

Broken circuits cause depression

The latest science believes that depression may be caused by a disruption in the circuit connecting two important brain structures involved in emotion creation and emotion regulation. Researchers are not sure what leads to the disruption, but once that connection stops working correctly people feel low mood, dampened motivation, and other common symptoms of depression.

Neurostar TMS fights depression at the source

Neurostar TMS targets the exact brain circuit that causes depression. By repeatedly stimulating the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the brain with magnetic pulses, we are often able to repair the deeper brain circuit until it is working correctly again.

Neurostar TMS is so effective, because it targets the root cause of depression.

Indication

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy System is indicated for the treatment of depressive episodes and for decreasing anxiety symptoms for those who may exhibit comorbid anxiety symptoms in adult patients suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and who failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from previous antidepressant medication treatment in the current episode.

The NeuroStar Advanced Therapy system is intended to be used as an adjunct for the treatment of adult patients suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is only available by prescription. A doctor can help decide if NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is right for you. Patients’ results may vary.

Important Safety Information

The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site. These events are transient; they occur during the TMS treatment course and do not occur for most patients after the first week of treatment. There is a rare risk of seizure associated with the use of TMS therapy (<0.1% per patient).

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy should not be used with patients who have non-removable conductive metal in or near the head. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy has not been studied in patients who have not received prior antidepressant treatment.
